Study Identifies Measurements for ACL Bundle Attachment Centers

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Robert F. LaPrade, MD, orthopedic surgeon with The Steadman Clinic and director of the biomechanics department of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colo., recently developed a comprehensive compilation of measurements of arthroscopically pertinent bony and soft tissue landmarks, which show the ACL and its individual bundle attachment centers on the tibia and femur, according to an article published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. LaPrade found that the ACL attachment center was 7.5 millimeters medial to the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus, 13 millimeters anterior to the retro-eminence ridge and 10.5 millimeters posterior to the ACL ridge. He also found measurements for several other attachments, including the tibial posterior ligament bundle attachment center (6.6 millimeters medial to the posteromedial aspect of the lateral meniscus anterior horn and 8.4 millimeter anterior to the retro-eminence ridge).
