Foot and Ankle Injuries Among Athletes Steadily Increasing
Written by Laura Miller | September 02, 2010
Sports-related foot and ankle injuries are increasing among athletes, often because the initial injury's severity is misunderstood and overlooked, according to an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons news release.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, football-related toe, foot and ankle injuries have been increasing since 2003. These injuries, often occurring in individuals who do a lot of running, are categorized as sprains, which many athletes consider minor injuries. However, delaying treatment or returning to activity too rapidly could lead to fractures, bone and joint arthritis and chronic deformity.
Athletes can prevent further injury by stretching prior to their activity, wearing appropriate shoes and playing on organic as opposed to artificial field surfaces.
