Here are 12 recent orthopedic surgeries for professional athletes.
James Andrews, MD
, founder of Andrews Institute for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla., performed knee surgery on Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who tore his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments during a game.

Dr. Andrews also performed knee surgery on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who suffered a slight meniscal tear. He was expected to return to play two weeks after the procedure.

performed a third procedure recently to repair an elbow injury for Detroit Tigers pitcher Al Alburquerque. He stabilized Mr. Alburquerque's stress fracture and the pitcher is expected to spend 12 weeks recovering and miss the first half of the 2012 season.

Memphis Grizzlies team physicians Fred Azar, MD, and Drew Murphy, MD, performed Achilles tendon repair on forward Darrell Arthur. The repair was performed at Campbell Surgery Center and Mr. Arthur is expected to sit out the rest of the season.

Hospital for Special Surgery's Frank Cordasco, MD, performed a procedure to repair St. Louis Rams left tackle Roger Saffold's torn pectoral muscle. Mr. Saffold is expected to spend four to five months recovering from the procedure.

Minnesota Timberwolves team physician David Fischer, MD, performed knee surgery on guard Malcolm Lee at TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Minneapolis. The meniscal repair was the second procedure performed on his left knee and he will spend six weeks in recovery.

Hand and wrist surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Tom Graham, MD, performed wrist surgery on Texas Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland, who suffered from tendonitis during the second half of the 2011 season. Dr. Graham removed a small bone at the base of the first baseman's wrist and Mr. Moreland is expected to return to play for spring training.

Raleigh Orthopedic's Marty Isbell, MD, recently performed knee surgery on Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen, who previously suffered a concussion. He will spend four weeks recovering from the knee procedure.

Team medical director for the Seattle Mariners Edward Khalfayan, MD, performed shoulder surgery on relief pitcher Dan Cortes to repair rotator cuff damage and a partial tear of the biceps tendon.

Spinal consultant for the Chicago Bears Srdjan Mirkovic, MD, performed spine surgery on receiver Johnny Knox, who was injured during a game. The surgery stabilized Mr. Knox's L1 vertebra and he is expected to spend three months recovering.

New Jersey Nets team physician Riley Williams, III, MD, who practices at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, performed surgery to stabilize a fracture in center Brooke Lopez's right foot. He suffered a non-displaced stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and will return to play six to eight weeks after the procedure.

Lewis Yocum, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, performed shoulder surgery on Boston Red Sox fielder Ryan Kalish for a torn left labrum. The month before this procedure, Mr. Kalish underwent neck surgery and isn't expected to return to play before the beginning of the 2012 season.
