ISASS Joins Medical Societies Petition to Eliminate SGR

Spine

The International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery has joined with the American Medical Association and more than 100 medical societies in writing Congress about the sustainable growth rate and a transition to a better model of care. The letter describes the SGR as "an enormous impediment to successful healthcare delivery and payment reforms," while acknowledging that other initiatives are underway in Medicare and the private sector to improve the physician payment system. These reforms, many physician-led, include patient-center medical homes, accountable care organizations, bundles payments and more.

The letter also acknowledges that eliminating the SGR is only the first step, and the signing organizations included a list of driving principles and core elements for a transition from SGR to "a higher performing Medicare program."
