Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Frank Schwab of New York University Hospital of Joint Diseases

Frank J. Schwab, MD, is the chief of the spinal deformity service at New York University Hospital of Joint Diseases, New York University School of Medicine. He has previously served as director of orthopedic research and director of the spine center at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. He has a professional interest in complex revision surgery, spinal deformity and minimally invasive techniques. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Schwab is a leading member of the Spinal Deformity Study Group and is on several committees with the Scoliosis Research Society. He is also a member of North American Spine Society and on the board of directors for the Spinal Deformity Education Group.

Dr. Schwab's research focuses on adult scoliosis, force plate analysis in the setting of spinal deformity and interbody fusion techniques. He has published articles in several professional journals and given presentations nationally on spine-related topics.

His work has been recognized by several societies, including the Scoliosis Research Society and Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of New York. Dr. Schwab is also a clinical associate professor at the New York University School of Medicine.

Dr. Schwab earned his medical degree at College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York City and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. His additional training includes a National Science Foundation-NATO postdoctoral fellowship at Hopital Lariboisiere-St. Louis in Paris as well as advanced spine training at Maimonides Medical Center in New York.
