Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Christopher DeWald of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush

Christopher DeWald, MD, is an orthopedic and spine surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush and assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. DeWald's practice emphasis is on spine surgeries and scoliosis and performs thoroscopic spine surgeries, adult spinal reconstruction and scoliosis surgeries. He has lectured nationally and internationally on advanced techniques in spinal surgery. His research interest is in fusionless scoliosis surgery.

"We see a lot of teenagers who have scoliosis and I operate on a lot of teenagers and also brace teenagers to correct scoliosis," Dr. DeWald said in a Rush You Tube video. "Maybe I'm not as hip as I think I am but I seem to be able to relate and understand how they feel and make both the parents and kids feel comfortable."

Dr. DeWald earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Illinois Hospital. He later served as a fellow in the Chicago Spine Fellowship, practicing at both Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center and Shriner's Hospital for Children.

He's also participated in spine surgery fellowships in Germany, France, England and Japan.
