Quick Tip: Staffing Excellent Surgeons at Your Orthopedic-Driven ASC
Written by Jaimie Oh | October 13, 2010
Ralph Gambardella, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and president of Kerlan-Jobe Surgery Center in Los Angeles, discusses a number of quick tips on how to recruit the best orthopedic surgeons at your ASC.
Dr. Gambardella: We have the opportunity to work with residents for a full year through our facility's fellowship program. So before we hire any surgeons, we already know that these are people who have been trained in the best residency programs. The best of the best are chosen to work with us, and we have a chance to mold them and lead those individuals. After one year with them, Kerlan-Jobe makes a decision on whether that person fits into what would work well for our group.
Every ASC looks for different things. As a group, I think the most important thing Kerlan-Jobe looks for is people skills. People skills have to be there because orthopedic practice is essentially a customer service industry. So we look at how they interact with their peers, ancillary personnel, trainers and patients, whether [the patient is] a professional athlete or not.
