BioniCare Knee System Brace Developed for Osteoarthritis Treatment

To meet the needs of the growing number of patients developing osteoarthritis in the knee, VQ OrthoCare developed the BioniCare Knee System brace.

The BioniCare brace is an alternative to invasive treatment options, such as medication, injection or surgery. "It has two functions," says Fredric Nicola, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and director of the Knee and Hip Institute at D.I.S.C. Sports and Spine Center in Marina del Rey, Calif. "It unloads the knee joint and sends a low electrical field across the knee, which re-stimulates the normal environment of the knee joint."

Patients using the brace have reported less joint pain, increased motion and less need for medication. Sixty percent of the people who wear the brace delay a total knee replacement or don't experience symptoms of osteoarthritis after wearing the brace for one year, according to a Johns Hopkins study. "The function in the knee improves so people are able to be more active on their knees," says Dr. Nicola, which includes retired professional athletes.
