10 Surgeon Appointments to Orthopedic and Spine Device Companies

Here are 10 orthopedic and spine surgeons who have been appointed to medical and scientific advisory boards of device companies since last December.


Theralase Technologies appointed James Andrews, MD, founder of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla., as chairman of its Medical and Scientific Advisory Board. Several medical and physiotherapy scientists from ASMI will join Dr. Andrews on the board.

Duke University professor and team physician David J. Berkoff, MD, has been named to the board of directors of Fuse Science. Dr. Berkoff's research and experience with athletes will help guide the company in developing sports medicine products.

Broomfield, Colo.-based spine device company Lanx, appointed Andrew Cappuccino, MD, of Buffalo Spine Surgery in Lockport, N.Y., chairman of its newly-formed Surgeon Advisory Board. He and other board members will be responsible for providing guidance on product commercialization, clinical studies and surgeon training.

Advanced BioMedical Technologies recently named Thomas DeBerardino, MD, of the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, chief medical advisor for North America. Dr. DeBarardino has a professional interest in sports medicine.

Lanx also named Ryan DenHaese, MD, of Buffalo Spine Surgery in Lockport, N.Y., medical education director for its new training program. The company is establishing regional training centers staffed by surgeons with expertise in lateral fusion procedures.

Cayenne Medical appointed sports medicine physician and orthopedic surgeon Dev K. Mishra, MD, as medical director of the company in June. He will provide counsel in medical education and clinical activities with a focus on new product development and the design of clinical protocols and procedures.

Steve Paragioudakis, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and founder of Orthopedic Spine Specialists of New Jersey in Hackensack, was named to the board of medical advisors for United Health Products in June. The company develops and markets medical technologies.

SI-BONE, a medical device company focused on a minimally invasive solution for treating sacroiliac joint pain, appointed Ralph Rashbaum, MD, co-founder of Texas Back Institute in Plano, to its medical advisory board.

Jonathan Slotkin, MD, director of spinal surgery and spinal cord research at Geisinger Health System's Neurosciences Institute, was appointed medical director of InVivo Therapeutics in July. He will assist the company with regulatory submissions clinical and medical reporting and clinical trial monitoring, among other responsibilities.

Edward Wirth, MD, PhD, a surgeon with an interest in studying spinal cord injury treatment, was named the new chief science officer for InVivo Therapeutics. Dr. With previously served as medical director for regenerative medicine with Geron.
