A German District Court in Mannheim has dismissed Synthes' patent infringement claims against Spinal Kinetics, and the court ordered Synthes to pay certain litigation costs. The patent infringement case was brought against Spinal Kinetics for its M6-C cervical and M6-L lumbar artificial discs for patients with degenerative disc disease. The device is designed to replicate the biomechanics of natural discs by incorporating an artificial nucleus and annulus.
The company has completed an FDA investigational device exemption study with patients who have single and two level cervical disc disease and has been approved for a large, multi-center pivotal study of the disc.
